After the war, he returned to the Akademie and completed his studies in graphic design.

Career as a Children’s Book Author

After completing his studies, Eric Carle worked as a freelance graphic designer and advertising artist. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that he began to focus on creating children’s books. In 1967, he published his first children’s book, “1, 2, 3 to the Zoo.” This was followed by his most famous work, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” which was published in 1969.

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” tells the story of a caterpillar that eats its way through various fruits and foods before turning into a butterfly. The book’s unique format, colorful illustrations, and simple yet engaging story made it an instant classic. It has sold over 50 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 60 languages.

Eric Carle went on to write and illustrate over 70 children’s books, many of which have become classics in their own right. His works are known for their bright, bold colors, and simple yet powerful messages. He often drew inspiration from nature, using a variety of materials such as tissue paper, acrylics, and collages to create his illustrations.
