The Culture Challenge: How One Church Maintains Biblical Truth in Modern Times

In an era where traditional values often clash with contemporary culture, Bethel Deliverance International Church stands as a testament to maintaining biblical truth while engaging with modern society. From its humble beginnings in 1987 with just seven believers to its current status as an international ministry, Bethel’s journey offers insights into navigating today’s cultural landscape without compromising religious principles.

“It is the vision of this church to demonstrate both the character of Christ and the love of God,” states the church’s foundational vision statement. This dual emphasis – maintaining Christian character while actively demonstrating love – has become increasingly crucial in today’s complex social environment.

Under the leadership of Bishop Eric A. Lambert, Jr., Bethel has evolved from a small gathering in an office complex to a thriving international ministry. The church’s approach to cultural challenges is reflected in Lambert’s own academic journey – combining theological training with contemporary education, including a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from Nova Southeastern University.

This blend of spiritual foundation and modern understanding is evident in Lambert’s published works, including “The Christian and the Culture” and “Cancel the Culture,” which directly address the intersection of faith and contemporary society. These works represent part of the church’s broader strategy to engage with cultural challenges while maintaining biblical integrity.

“Bethel’s mission is to bring a real Jesus to the world,” explains the church’s mission statement. This emphasis on authenticity – presenting a “real” Jesus – speaks to the church’s approach to cultural engagement. Rather than retreating from cultural challenges, Bethel seeks to demonstrate how biblical principles remain relevant and applicable in modern contexts.

The church’s evolution reflects this commitment to cultural engagement while maintaining spiritual foundations. In 2004, Bethel Deliverance Church expanded to become Bethel Deliverance International Church, broadening its scope while maintaining its core focus on “prayer, education, evangelism, and fellowship.”

This expansion included the development of over 40 specialized ministries, each designed to address different aspects of modern life. The church’s comprehensive approach includes daily prayer sessions, Bible studies, and community outreach programs, demonstrating how traditional religious practices can be maintained and made relevant in contemporary settings.

Through its Bethel Institute of Biblical Studies (formerly Bethel Bible Institute), the church emphasizes the importance of proper biblical instruction in addressing modern challenges. The institute’s focus on “life application” demonstrates Bethel’s commitment to making biblical teachings practical and relevant in today’s world.

The church’s community outreach arm, Lights of The World, Inc., established in 1991, serves as a bridge between spiritual truth and social needs. This ministry exemplifies how churches can maintain biblical principles while actively engaging with and serving their communities.

“We want to share our message of hope with the community,” states the church’s outreach goals. “We want people to know that Jesus is the answer to all of the problems in our world.” This approach acknowledges both the challenges of modern culture and the church’s role in providing biblical solutions.

Bishop Lambert’s multilingual capabilities – speaking fluent Italian and proficient Russian – further illustrates the church’s commitment to crossing cultural barriers while maintaining its message. Through various media outlets, including the “Climbing Higher” television broadcast, Bethel extends its message beyond traditional church walls.
