Breaking Down Walls: Addressing Church Division with Hope

The challenge of church division is one that resonates deeply within Christian communities worldwide. At Bethel Deliverance International Church, the journey from seven believers in 1987 to an international ministry offers unique insights into maintaining unity while growing exponentially.

“It is the vision of this church to demonstrate both the character of Christ and the love of God,” states their foundational vision. This dual emphasis on character and love has proven crucial in addressing potential divisions that often arise as churches grow. Under Bishop Eric A. Lambert, Jr. ‘s leadership, Bethel has developed practical approaches to maintaining unity across an expanding congregation.

The transformation in 2004 from Bethel Deliverance Church to Bethel Deliverance International Church presented a significant test of unity. This expansion required bridging cultural and geographical divides while maintaining their core focus on “prayer, education, evangelism, and fellowship.” Their success in this transition demonstrates how churches can grow without fragmenting.

Bishop Lambert’s educational journey itself models unity amid diversity. His studies span multiple institutions – from Deliverance Evangelistic Bible Institute to Nova Southeastern University, where he earned his Master’s in Forensic Psychology. This breadth of education enables him to connect with people from various educational and social backgrounds, fostering unity through understanding.

The establishment of the Bethel Bible Institute in 1990, now the Bethel Institute of Biblical Studies, plays a crucial role in maintaining doctrinal unity. Through standardized biblical education, the institute ensures that all members share a common foundation of understanding, reducing the likelihood of divisive interpretations.

Their community outreach arm, Lights of The World, Inc., established in 1991, demonstrates how shared mission can unite diverse groups. By focusing on meeting social and temporal needs, this ministry creates common ground where differences fade in the face of collective purpose.

Language barriers often contribute to church division, but Bethel actively addresses this through Bishop Lambert’s multilingual capabilities. His fluency in Italian and proficiency in Russian exemplify the church’s commitment to breaking down communication barriers that could lead to division.

The development of over 40 specialized ministries could have led to fragmentation, but instead serves as a model of unity in diversity. Each ministry operates within the larger church vision, demonstrating how different functions can strengthen rather than divide the body of Christ.

Their approach to worship services shows practical unity in action. With three Sunday services, Youth Church (ages 12-17), Children’s Church (ages 3-11), and infant care services, Bethel demonstrates how different age groups and preferences can be accommodated without creating division.

The church’s media ministry, including the “Climbing Higher” television broadcast, serves as a unifying platform. By sharing consistent messages across various media channels, they maintain doctrinal and visional unity while reaching diverse audiences.

Daily prayer sessions, including morning and midday prayer, provide regular opportunities for unified spiritual practice. The “All Night Prayer” sessions on the first and third Fridays of each month particularly demonstrate how shared spiritual experiences can strengthen church unity.

Bishop Lambert’s literary works, including nine published books, contribute to maintaining unity through shared understanding. His writings provide common ground for discussion and application of biblical principles across the congregation.

Their belief statement that “God, while living in heaven, does indeed care for the everyday needs of humanity” creates unity through shared purpose. This practical approach to faith gives members a common mission that transcends potential divisions.

The church’s growth pattern demonstrates how unity can be maintained through expansion. From an office complex to an international ministry, each stage of growth has been managed with attention to maintaining connectedness among members.

The establishment of the Bethel Deliverance International Fellowship of Churches further exemplifies their commitment to unity. As stated in their documents, this fellowship is “designed to promote growth, unity, education and spiritual connection among the member churches.”
