Car chase near school with police vehicles in pursuit.

An uninsured Albanian driver led police on a dangerous pursuit near a school, showcasing reckless driving behaviour that put the safety of others at risk. The incident, which occurred on September 13, 2024, involved 25-year-old Endi Serezi, who was driving a Ford Transit van that did not belong to him. After ignoring police signals to stop, Serezi accelerated, leading officers on a chase that ended with him abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.

Key Takeaways

  • Endi Serezi, 25, led police on a high-speed chase in Newcastle.
  • He drove on a footpath and exceeded the speed limit near a school.
  • Serezi was arrested after abandoning the van and attempting to escape on foot.
  • He received a suspended prison sentence and a driving ban.

The Incident

The chase began when a police officer on a motorbike spotted Serezi driving towards the A1 on Newcastle’s West Road. When the officer attempted to pull him over, Serezi accelerated instead, overtaking several vehicles and exceeding the 30mph speed limit. Witnesses reported that he swerved across the road and braked hard at junctions, creating a hazardous situation, especially near a school.

During the pursuit, Serezi drove onto a footpath, where his van became blocked by a fence. Realising he could not escape in the vehicle, he and his passenger fled on foot, prompting a foot chase with the police.

Court Proceedings

Serezi was apprehended shortly after abandoning the van. In court, he pleaded guilty to several charges, including dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for a police constable. Prosecutor Claire Armstrong detailed the reckless nature of Serezi’s driving, emphasising the danger posed to himself and other road users.

Defending Serezi, solicitor Syed Ahmed explained that his client was not working in the UK and was living off his savings and support from his parents. He also mentioned that Serezi’s passenger, an immigrant, had panicked upon seeing the police, which contributed to Serezi’s decision to evade arrest.

Sentencing

District Judge Paul Currer sentenced Serezi to 24 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and banned him from driving for a year. In his remarks, Judge Currer highlighted the seriousness of the offence, stating, "You are guilty of a serious offence of dangerous driving. Driving in the manner you did, you presented a danger to yourself and other road users."

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to road safety regulations, especially in areas frequented by pedestrians and children.

Conclusion

The pursuit of Endi Serezi not only endangered lives but also highlighted the ongoing issues of uninsured drivers on the roads. Authorities continue to stress the importance of responsible driving and the legal repercussions of such dangerous behaviour.
