One of Modigliani’s most celebrated seated nudes, part of the revolutionary series painted between 1916 and 1919 that scandalised Paris and redefined the nude for the modern era. Works from this iconic series have achieved extraordinary multi-million-dollar results at auction, reflecting their enduring power and desirability among the world’s most serious collectors.

Sold for $157.2 million at Sotheby’s New York in 2018 — the highest price in the auction house’s entire history. A monumental work from Modigliani’s legendary nude series, it stands as one of the most important and celebrated paintings of the artist’s career.

Modigliani’s Nu Couché sold for a staggering $170.4 million at Christie’s New York in 2015, making it the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction at the time. Part of the series that prompted police to shut down Modigliani’s only solo exhibition in 1917, this remains one of the most valuable and recognisable paintings in existence.
