Messina's Mental Health Journey: Turning Pain into Purpose through Music

Pop artist Messina has never shied away from confronting the darkest parts of her life. As an LGBTQ-American and U.S. Army veteran, she’s faced mental health struggles that nearly cost her her life. But through these challenges, Messina found healing and purpose, channeling her pain into her music and advocacy work. Her powerful, raw songs reflect her personal journey with depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts, giving a voice to those who feel lost and isolated.

In a society where mental health issues are often stigmatized, Messina’s openness is a breath of fresh air. She’s built her career on authenticity, using her platform to inspire others to seek help, be vulnerable, and embrace their stories, no matter how difficult they may be. Her mission is simple yet profound: to show people that healing is possible, even when it seems unreachable.

Music as Therapy

For Messina, music has always been a form of therapy. Her songwriting is a way to process the emotions that once felt overwhelming. Rather than burying her pain, she brings it into the light, crafting lyrics that resonate deeply with fans who have experienced similar struggles.

Each of Messina’s songs tells a story—whether it’s about a personal relationship, a battle with inner demons, or a reflection on her experiences as a veteran. Her single “No Longer Wasted,” which has already amassed over 150,000 streams, is an anthem of survival and self-worth, a declaration of triumph over despair.

“I write music to heal, not just myself but others,” Messina says. “I want people to know that they’re not alone, that there’s always a way forward, even when everything feels impossible.”

Her music is more than entertainment—it’s a lifeline for those who are struggling. Fans often reach out to Messina, sharing how her songs have helped them through their darkest moments. This connection between artist and audience is what drives Messina to continue sharing her story, even when it’s painful.

Advocacy Beyond the Stage

Messina’s commitment to mental health advocacy goes beyond her music. She is also the co-founder of LGBTQ VSAP (Veterans Suicide Awareness Program), an organization that provides resources and support to veterans and their families. Having experienced both the challenges of military life and the unique pressures of being an LGBTQ veteran, Messina knows firsthand the importance of mental health support in these communities.

Through LGBTQ VSAP, Messina works to create a space where veterans can access the help they need, whether it’s counseling, peer support, or educational resources for families. The organization also focuses on breaking the stigma around mental health, encouraging open conversations about the struggles many veterans face.

“My goal is to make sure that no one feels ashamed for needing help,” Messina explains. “We’ve lost too many people because they were afraid to speak up. I want to change that.”

A Lifelong Mission

Messina’s journey from despair to hope is far from over. She continues to use her music, her platform, and her advocacy work to reach those who need it most. For her, the fight for mental health awareness and suicide prevention is not just a cause—it’s a personal mission that has shaped every aspect of her life and career.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, don’t wait to reach out for help. Visit LGBTQ VSAP or The Monique Woolley Foundation to find resources, support, and community.
